  • The symbolism of this image from the Roman Missal is wonderful for meditation. The Eucharist is displayed in the middle with the consecrated Host above the chalice filled with the Precious Blood of Christ. The altars with fires burning evoke the memory of Abraham's being asked by God to sacrifice his son, Isaac. God Himself this day allowed His own Son to be sacrificed, to take away the sins of the world. The deer drinking from the waters of the Fons Vitae (Fountain of Life) that flows out of the chalice remind us of the verse Psalm 41:2 in Latin: “Sicut cervus desiderat ad fontes aquarum, ita desiderat anima mea ad te Deus.” “As the deer long for the springs of water, so my soul longs for you, oh God.” And the deer also remind us of the the final verse of Psalm 109, which sums up the mystery of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection, “He shall drink of the torrent in the way; therefore He shall lift up his head” (Psalm 109:7). The torrent in the way is the torrent of His bitter sufferings. And "therefore He shall lift up his head" refers to "the glory of His resurrection and ascension.”
